This role supports all Long Term Care homes across Canada

Reporting to the National Director - Nutritional Care and Culinary Services, the National Support Dietitian is responsible for supporting the Nutritional and Culinary Program for Long Term Care (LTC).  This role will provide ongoing direction and leadership to LTC home level Registered Dietitians, Nutrition Managers and other interdisciplinary team members regarding Nutritional Care provided within LTC homes and meet divisional goals and objectives through the development/revision and implementation of programs, initiatives and procedures including, but not limited to, weight management, optimal food and fluid intake, enteral nutrition management, dysphagia management, skin and wound care management, bowel management, management of various disease conditions, falls prevention and intake assistance as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and collaborate with other Registered Dietitians to ensure the Nutritional and Culinary Program as outlined in policies and procedures, education and tools are aligned with evidence-based research and best practice;
  • Collaborate with Executive Directors in the selection and onboarding of newly hired home level Registered Dietitians and Dietary Managers as required;
  • Provide support to Regional Directors of Operations, regional teams and the homes’ management teams to meet regulatory and program standards for Nutrition and Culinary Services;
  • Provide direct support to home level Registered Dietitians and Dietary Managers with regards to Nutritional Care and meeting business plan objectives;
  • Develop/Revise and approve seasonal base menus in consultation with the Nutrition and Culinary Support Team while adhering to provincial governing body requirements and dietetic practice guidelines;
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert for Nutrition and Culinary related proof of concepts, pilots, initiatives and projects;
  • Provide leadership and support during planning and implementation of Nutrition and Culinary continuous quality improvement activities;
  • Attend and participate in regional meetings and conferences to provide updates, share resources and assist in problem solving;
  • Respond to clinical nutrition emergency situations in all LTC homes as required;
  • Act as a resource to regions and specific homes by providing consultation and education regarding nutritional care through on site sessions or by email/teleconference/webinars;
  • Provide support to homes struggling to meet the recommended Nutritional Supplement PRD Target;
  • Facilitate the placement and mentoring of Dietetic interns and provide educational opportunities for completion of Dietetic Internships as required;
  • Provide clinical nutrition support to Retirement Communities, as required;
  • Provide clinical nutrition subject matter expertise in the planning and implementation of retirement projects / initiatives, as required;
  • Lead/Support initiatives to improve overall Resident Food Satisfaction;
  • Analyze challenging situations and support with problem-solving and the development of action plans with Nutrition Managers/Registered Dietitians and Executive Directors;

  • Complete all other duties as assigned.



  • Degree in an accredited dietetic undergraduate education program and/or related discipline with supplemental courses in food/nutrition/hospitality
  • Registered Dietitian, with membership in the applicable province’s regulatory College of Dietitians
  • Minimum of five (5) years clinical nutrition long term care experience
  • Administrative background in Food Service Operations considered an asset
  • Supplemental courses and/or experience in adult education/teaching considered an asset
  • Membership in Dietitians of Canada
  • Must be knowledgeable about provincial Food Premises regulations and Provincial Legislation (standards/regulations)
  • Must be knowledgeable of therapeutic diets, texture modification and thickened fluids
  • Must possess excellent time management and decision-making skills related to setting and managing conflicting priorities and managing numerous tasks in a project setting with minimum supervision
  • Must possess good written and oral communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal and team building skills, with a positive working attitude
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to travel extensively within area of responsibility
